HIKING INDIAN CANYONS

One of the most beautiful attractions, not only in Palm Springs but all of Western North America, Indian Canyons, is a must see for any visitor, especially those who love to hike. Unlike other area desert trails, many of the Indian Canyon trails follow running streams, abundant in California Fan Palms, native vegetation and wildlife.  Easy to walk and hike, the Canyons will surprise you with their lush beauty, rugged desert landscape and fascinating Indian history. www.indian-canyons.com

Inside the Canyons, you’ll find separate trails leading into:

Andreas Canyon

A lush oasis filled with magnificent skirted fan palms and more than 150 species of native plants. You’ll hike past unusual rock formations and the perennial Andreas Creek.  Truly a spectacular hike.

Palm Canyon

A fifteen-mile hike filled with indigenous flora and fauna contrasting with the breathtaking vistas of stark rocky gorges and barren desert lands.

Murray Canyon

Easy to moderate hike and less traveled than the others.  If you’re lucky, you’ll catch site of a Big Horn Sheep or mule deer.

Indian Canyons is owned and operated by the Cahuilla Tribe.  There is a fee to enter payable at the tollgate.  Ranger led hikes are conducted every Friday-Sunday, October through June, at prescheduled times and are included in the price of admission

To get there, take South Palm Canyon from Highway 111 and drive two miles to the Indian Canyons tollgate. There are signs posted along the way to help.
