VillageFest: The Desert’s Weekly Street Party

Local artisan booths at Palm Springs VillageFest

If you’re in Palm Springs on a Thursday, there’s really only one place to start your evening: Palm Springs VillageFest. As the sun dips behind the San Jacinto Mountains, a few blocks in the heart of downtown are closed to car traffic and transformed into a lively, open-air night market where the city’s creative spirit, food scene, and social energy all come together. If you’ve never been before, prepared to be charmed.

With over 180 vendor booths and food stalls lining both sides of Palm Canyon Drive, you’ll find everything from local artists selling original paintings and midcentury-inspired prints to small-batch botanicals, handmade jewelry, leather goods, and locally grown dates. There’s a strong LGBTQ+ presence, and many of the vendors are the actual artists, growers, and makers themselves––like our friends Billy & Jeff at Palm Springs Candle Company (pictured up top).

Food vendors are a big part of the draw, with some of the most popular stalls clustered toward the north end of the festival. Think fresh tamales, street tacos, empanadas, and grilled sausages plus sweet treats like slushies and Hawaiian-style shave ice. It’s less about formal dining and more about grazing your way through the evening. Grab something delicious and find yourself a curb or patio for a little people watching.

Adding to the festive atmosphere, many retail businesses along Palm Canyon Drive stay open later during VillageFest. The world-class Palm Springs Art Museum even offers free admission from 5:00 to 8:00pm (not to be missed!).

When VillageFest begins to wind down around 10:00pm, the energy shifts just a block over to the Arenas District where spots like BlackBook, Quadz, Hunters, and Chill Bar keep the block party vibe going until late with boozy beverages, karaoke, and pulsating dance floors.

VillageFest takes place most every Thursday in the heart of downtown, centered around Palm Canyon Drive near Tahquitz Canyon Way. Hours shift seasonally: October through May, expect 6:00 to 10:00pm; in the warmer summer months, it starts slightly later, from 7:00 to 10:00pm. Park nearby on the street, or in one of the free downtown parking structures. For more details check out the VillageFest website here.
